Poor lambs
I went driving all the way to Kerikeri last week. Cruising down the highway, the sun shining, Rock'n'roll Jukebox Hits on the stereo (I raided my parents' tape collection), rollling green hills to either side, blue sky on the horizon and hundreds of animal eyes watching me from the side of the road. This country is packed full of animals! Everywhere I went, there were cows with calves, sheep with lambs, pigs, dogs, turkeys, quails, pukekoes, horses and ducks, frolicking merrily in the pastures. So cute, those little lambs, the way their tails wiggle-waggle as they get a feed from mum. The way they skip around with their adorable little woolly legs.
'They'll all end up on someone's dinner table in Europe within a couple of weeks,' remarked a friend with a shrug, when I told them about my trip.'That's the sad thing.'
Poor lambs. If only the carnivores in Europe could see their sweet little faces, they would swear off eating them for life. Wouldn't they? Maybe not. I mean, farmers eat their own animals all the time. That's no big deal to them. I heard New Zealand described as 'Europe's larder' once. At this time of year, the larder is well and truly stocked. Come summer, there will be a lot of lonely sheep mums out there.

do kiwis not eat lamb? its not so popular in canada.
i think its interesting how people are socialized to accept certain animals as food and not others. 'we' eat cow and not dog. yet in india you'd never eat cow and in korea you'd eat dog. as long as the animal has had a fair and humane life and is killed fairly too then its ok with me (however i don't meat myself)
We do eat lamb, but most of it would be exported. I agree with you on the fair and humane life bit - I don't know if I think that lambs get that, as they don't get to grow to maturity. What do you think?
i didn't want to sound preachy or hypocritical in my last post so i didn't mention that i'm a vegetarian because animals have such a crap life before we eat them (usually). i don't often talk about this because i wear leather shoes, eat eggs, eat food made from dairy products BUT at least it's a small step right!? have you read fast food nation? good read if you haven't.
off topic- i don't have skype yet but when i do you'll be the first i call. we can have a cocktail and computer party
I'm the same as you - although I don't eat meat apart from seafood, I feel a little hypocritical about being holier-than-thou on the subject as I wear leather shoes, eat dairy etc. I try to eat free-range but as far as leather goes, I wouldn't have a clue where it came from. It's topic I found extremely difficult to discuss in Japan where vegetarianism of any kind is regarded as a mystery. I was sure when I explained my reasons, someone was going to jump to their feet and point at my boots, shouting 'But what about THOSE?'
Speaking of shoes, I did finally find some gold high heels today second-hand for 16 bucks, and they are vinyl all the way.
Cocktails and computers, bring it on!
linkity-link link....
i think a happy comprimise to your meat discussion is that we should all vote to eat game meat and ban industrial meat? mmm i love a good caribou.
hope you kate's are great!
Fox pie anyone?
Actually, I would rather not hunt down an animal before I killed it. i think I'd rather sneak up on it quietly from behind so that it was dead before it knew what had hit it (literally). Then again, I'd rather just eat a salad. I don't like the taste of meat enough to kill. When it comes to shoes, it seems to be a different story! Vanity over gluttony, perhaps?
